Nationwide, the argument over whether or not to reopen public schools now that just about everyone knows the “safe” protocols for COVID-19 and so many school districts have purchased spacing cubicles and vaccines are available and…well, the excuse list is dwindling for the teacher’s unions which seem to be the big impediment to reopening.
Frankly, for the most part, the word is that they just want to teach remotely.
Of course, the parents of children who attend public schools are frustrated with this as their children’s social development among other types is suffering. It also means the kids are still at home all day long, and for parents who work outside the home, this is an issue.
And so, over the weekend, when a highly manipulated video of the head of the teacher’s union in Berkeley, California, Matt Meyer, was filmed taking his two-year-old daughter to a private pre-school, the moms in the area cried foul.
“We need to point out abuses of power when they occur, especially when our children’s rights are violated repeatedly,” the organization said to SFGATE in a statement. “Meyer has repeatedly told the community it is unsafe to open schools while safely taking his own child to school.”
It seems that Meyer has been taking his daughter to this “school” since last year.
The video surfacing has prompted a protest at the Berkeley School District offices, and the head of the teacher’s union is being raked over the coals despite the reality that it was the governor of California, Gavin Newsome, who has the place locked down.
What is worrisome, though, is that the video was shot in the first place. It seems that the American people – at least in Berkeley – are comfortable being snitches. Hopefully, this is not a sign of things to come.
