The USS BonHomme Richard Amphibious Assault Vessel caught fire at around 0900 hours in port at the US Naval Base San Diego.
Reports are that at least one sailor has been treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries shortly after the fire broke out. There were an estimated 200 sailors on board at the time the fire began.
There are reports that an explosion was heard at the time the fire began and while still under investigation there is word that it was the result of some sort of welding accident.
The San Diego Fire Departmenmt is assisting the federal, base, and shipboard fire crews battle the blazing ship.
Foul play is not expected.
