Apparently there are still some in this country stuck in the last century with difficulty believing a black man can own property and has no right to defend himself when attacked… What’s that? The black man has a gun? Well damn… We better arrest him boss… Give me a frickin break… What they hell is wrong with some people?
Well, it might sound like something from last century but in Shenandoah County, Virginia located along the western mountain ridge of Virginia, about two hours outside of Washington, D.C., a black pastor found himself standing in the middle of a pre civil rights era nightmare.
61-year-old Leon McCray Sr. who owns an apartment building in Shenandoah County observed two white males dumping an old refrigerator on his property and when confronted they became angry and left… Moments later they returned with 3 others and surrounded Pastor McCray and began taunting him and yelling racial epithets at him. At one point one of them head-butted him and threatened to kill him.
With the five of them surrounding him making death threats Pastor McCray pulled his concealed weapon to keep them at bay and immediately dialed 911. Pastor McCray told a local television station:
“It got to the point where this is really getting really, really bad,” he said. “I couldn’t leave, I couldn’t do anything, and with the threats, I felt to save my life, I had to draw my gun.”
Now one might think if the police show up and find five people on property they don’t belong on and the property owner is terrified holding a handgun and talking to dispatch trying to prevent anyone from getting hurt that they would be more inclined to believe the property owner was the one under attack and at least get his side of the story regardless of what color the parties are… Nope, at least not the Shenandoah County Deputies that responded to this incident…
When the Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene Pastor McCray surrendered his weapon to them and after they spoke to the five white attackers trespassing on his property they arrested Pastor McCray without even asking him for his side of the story.
Pastor McCray was taken to the regional jail, charged with brandishing a firearm and released on bail… His five white trespassing attackers… Well, you boys run along now and behave yourselves…
Fortunately for Pastor McCray Shenandoah County has a Republican Sheriff who is not stuck in the Jim Crow era and after Pastor McCray was released he contacted Sheriff Carter who didn’t take long to figure out his Deputies had taken appropriate action against Pastor McCray and upon further investigation quickly determined that his five assailants his deputies let walk with a pat on the back needed to be arrested, criminally charged and processed into the regional jail…. He also immediately placed two supervising deputies on unpaid leave pending further investigation.
All five of these despicable hill critters who thought they had themselves something to laugh about at the next meeting of inbreds when they would regale their friends with their account of spewing the N word at and telling Pastor McCray that his motherf—ing Black life doesn’t make a difference in Shenandoah county and threatening to kill him now face a number of serious criminal charges…
Donny Salyers, 43, Dennis Salyers, 26, Farrah Salyers, 42, and Christopher Sharp, 57, have been charged with assault – hate crime, assault and battery by mob, and felony abduction. Amanda Salyers, 26, was charged with assault – hate crime, and assault and battery by mob. All of them are being held without bail…
Sheriff Carter spoke with the Commonwealth’s Attorney and all charges against Pastor McCray have been dropped… Sheriff Carter has made the following statement about the incident:
“After talking with him about the incident, it was apparent to me that the charge of brandishing was certainly not appropriate,” Carter said. “Actually, as I told Mr. McCray, if I were faced with similar circumstances, I would have probably done the same thing.”
Pastor McCray summed it up in a statement to a local newspaper like this:
“How humiliating, How dehumanizing … to look at this mob of individuals cheering on the sidelines waving as I was carted off to go to jail.”
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have no sympathy for any of these dirtbags and I hope when all is said and done Pastor McCray and all of the decent citizens of Shenandoah County see a fair and judicious resolution… There is no excuse for this sort of behaviour and I hope in the end it’s not just about someone serving time in prison, but an awakening that helps everyone recognize this sort of racial hatred has no place in America.
