After a report surfaced in American media that the Biden people were contemplating reviving the Obama Era financial arrangements and unfreezing some of the Iranian assets President Trump took hostage, Iranian officials say they are not interested.
Iran said that it will not stop its 20% uranium enrichment before the US lifts all sanctions, Iranian state TV quoted an unnamed official as saying in reaction to the US media report that Washington would offer a new proposal to jump-start talks.
“A senior Iranian official tells Press TV that Tehran will stop its 20% uranium enrichment only if the US lifts ALL its sanctions on Iran first,” state-run Press TV said on its website.
“The official said Tehran will further reduce its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal if the US does not lift all sanctions, warning that Washington is rapidly running out of time,” it added.
Iran wants everything back or nothing.
This should be no great surprise to anyone who has followed the Iranian defiance of oversight for its nuclear program. It does not matter what group is in power in Washington, the Iranians just go along their merry way enriching uranium and ignoring international efforts to reign in the programs that western powers consider to be rogue in the larger scheme of things.
Earlier this year, the U.S. suggested that it would give Iran access to a small amount of its billions of dollars in frozen assets in exchange for Iran stopping its 20 percent enrichment of uranium, one of the people confirmed.
Tehran balked at what it saw as an unequal offer. In response, it suggested that it would halt uranium enrichment for a month in exchange for the U.S. lifting all its sanctions. The American side saw that as more of a cheeky rejoinder than a serious counter-proposal, the person said.
And so, the dance continues.
