Trying not to offend people has gone to a new level in San Francisco. The school district there has elected to stop using the word “chief” in its job titles in order to keep from offending Native Americans.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday:
The word “chief” will no longer be used in reference to job titles in the San Francisco Unified School District in an effort, school officials said, to avoid the word’s connotation with Native Americans.
“While there are many opinions on the matter, our leadership team agreed that, given that Native American members of our community have expressed concerns over the use of the title, we are no longer going to use it,” Blythe said in an email.
Maybe then, the question should be posed to the indigenous people of North America what really does offend them since more than one nation surveyed has no problem with their tribal name being used as a mascot for various sports. Why would chief be a problem if it doesn’t even come from their languages, to begin with?
Or is it a matter of virtue signaling snowflakes looking for problems to fix where there isn’t one, to begin with. That always seems to be what is behind such machinations that make the people deciding such idiocy feel good but otherwise accomplish nothing.
