Given the level of gossip posing as news coming out of Washington, one would think it was an election year or something. The latest drop of salacious “news” is yet another leak ahead of Bob Woodward’s new book “Rage” claiming that Lindsey Graham told the president, Donald J. Trump, to go ahead and talk to the Washington Post veteran.
It seems that after the last Woodward tome, Trump really wasn’t sure he wanted to be interviewed by the Watergate scent hound. Graham told him he should.
‘Yeah. The last book Woodward wrote, Trump said he didn’t know that he had wanted to be interviewed,’ Graham told the Daily Beast.
‘So I said, well, the guy is a well-known presidential author. And, you know, you got a chance to tell your side of the story. The president agreed and there you go,’ he said.
According to reporting available at this time, the president spoke to Woodward eighteen times.
What purpose this served is anyone’s guess, but the people who know President Trump best in the White House are reportedly baffled as to why he would do such a thing given the Washington, D.C., swampian gossip machine that uses accusations like a club regardless of whether or not there is any backing to an allegation. It doesn’t seem to matter who recommended Trump do this.
However, people like Fox News’s Tucker Carlson are openly questioning Graham’s move in this case:
“Why in the world would he do that? Well, tonight from a source who knows the answer to that mystery, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina,” Carlson said, without naming his source. “It was Lindsey Graham who helped convince Donald Trump to talk to Bob Woodward, Lindsey Graham brokered that meeting, Lindsey Graham even sat in on the first interview between Bob Woodward and the president. How’d that turn out?”…
“Lindsey Graham is supposed to be a Republican, so why would he do something like that?” Carlson asked.
“You’d have to ask him, but keep in mind that Lindsey Graham has opposed, passionately opposed, virtually every major policy initiative that Donald Trump articulated when he first ran, from ending illegal immigration to pulling back from pointless wars, to maintaining law and order at home, Lindsey Graham was against all of that more than many Democrats. So maybe you already know the answer.”
Why Graham made the recommendation is one question. Why Trump did it is another.
Sometime in the future, we might get an answer to both questions.
